Should we blame you for taking a selfie at Auschwitz?

With the CIE Piment Langue d’oiseau

Who is Michelle? Or rather: who is a cat's life?

A carefree or poorly behaved teenager? Here we are witnessing the confrontation of two worlds: that of the “old people”, who watch the landscape pass by, and that of the young people, quick to put it in a box, this beautiful setting, with their fully equipped and ultra-connected smartphones.

It is to this new world that Kim, Angèle, Michelle, Sélim and Abel belong. And it is the old world that they come to visit by going to Auschwitz to discover the horror of the concentration camps, this hard and cold memory, which will not, however, resist Michelle's smile and the triggering of her camera. …

Did she fulfill her duty of memory by taking this selfie? Has she soiled the past by posing in front of the remains of the Shoah? Opinions differ on social networks, comments flow, and the Web closes in on Michelle, a virtual prisoner of cruel digital harassment. The screen becomes the point of confluence between reality and image, and redesigns our spaces of speech and freedom. With this choral piece inspired by a real news story, Sylvain Levey leaves us free to exercise our gaze – and our judgment – on this society of appearance that we have built. Thanks to a dramaturgy playing on the immediacy of the Internet, he dismantles the mechanism of virtual excitement, which borders on harassment.
